Devo for the Week:

Day 1: The God Who Closes the Distance
Reading: Romans 8:9-11; Ephesians 2:13

Devotional: Before Christ, we lived separated from God—distant, disconnected, slaves to our flesh. But when the Holy Spirit moved in, everything changed. He didn't just visit; He took up permanent residence, closing the gap between our sinful nature and God's holy presence. This isn't about occasional encounters with God; it's about constant communion. The Spirit dwelling in you means you now belong to Christ completely. You've moved from being a "God teaser"—playing at religion—to a "God pleaser" who lives in intimate relationship with the Father.

Today, recognize that the distance is gone. God isn't far off; He's inside you, transforming you from the inside out. What areas of your life are you still keeping at a distance from Him?
Day 2: From Death to Life
Reading: Romans 6:1-14; Ephesians 2:1-5

Devotional: You were spiritually dead—smiling on the outside while suffering on the inside, praying with no power, believing only what you could see. But the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead now lives in you, bringing resurrection power to your mortal body. This isn't just about heaven someday; it's about newness of life today. The indwelling Spirit revitalizes what sin made dead. He breathes life into your worship, power into your prayers, and hope into your heart. You're no longer a slave to the deadly patterns of your past. Through baptism into Christ's death and resurrection, you've been given spiritual vitality. Stop living like you're still in the grave. You've been raised to walk in newness of life. What "dead" areas of your life need the Spirit's resurrection power today?
Day 3: Realigned for His Purpose
Reading: Philippians 2:1-11; Romans 12:1-2

Devotional: The Holy Spirit didn't move in to co-exist with your old ways—He moved in to take over. Spiritual assimilation means becoming more like Christ, allowing His mind to become your mind. This requires intentional transformation: renewing your mind, refusing conformity to worldly patterns, and surrendering your will to His. You cannot be Spirit-filled and flesh-led simultaneously. God isn't your tenant paying rent in one room of your heart; He's the Landlord who owns the entire house. Every thought, every decision, every relationship must come under His lordship. The evidence of His indwelling is visible change—you simply cannot live the way you used to anymore.

Today, ask yourself: Is the Holy Spirit my roommate or my Ruler? What areas am I still controlling instead of surrendering?
Day 4: The Posture of the Spirit-led Life
Reading: Ephesians 5:15-21; Colossians 3:12-17

Devotional: Being Spirit-filled isn't primarily about speaking in tongues—it's about how you live daily. The Spirit-led life displays four distinct characteristics: continuous surrender (letting nothing influence you more than God), constant praise (psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs from the heart), perpetual gratitude (thanking God in all circumstances), and humble submission (serving others as unto Christ). This isn't a checklist to complete but a lifestyle to embrace. When the Spirit controls you, worship becomes natural, thanksgiving becomes automatic, and serving others becomes joyful. You're commanded to "be filled"—a continuous, passive action meaning you cannot fill yourself. You must daily position yourself to receive His fullness.

Today, evaluate your posture: Are you surrendered, praising, grateful, and serving? What's hindering the Spirit's full control in your life?
Day 5: Unlock Every Door
Reading: Revelation 3:14-22; Psalm 139:23-24

Devotional: Jesus stands at the door and knocks, but some doors in your heart remain locked. The Holy Spirit wants full access—to your broken heart, your weary spirit, your wandering mind, your secret shame, and your sinful ways. He wants to deal with your insecurities and indiscretions, your mess and your mindset. But He won't force entry; you must unlock the door. What room have you kept closed? What area of brokenness have you hidden even from God?

Today is your invitation to total surrender. Let the Holy Spirit rest, rule, and abide in every corner of your life. The transformation you've been longing for can only happen when you stop being Spirit-filled but not Spirit-led. Open that door today. Let Him transform you completely so you can live freely, fully alive in the power of His presence.

Key Takeaways

1. The Indwelling vs. Being Led
Every Christian has the Holy Spirit dwelling in them, but not every Christian is Spirit-led. God didn't move in to be your tenant—He's your Landlord.

2. Three Impacts of the Holy Spirit's Indwelling:
  • Removes the Distance (Access to God)
  • Revitalizes the Dead (Spiritual life)
  • Realigns Our Direction (Becoming more like Christ)

3. Four Signs of Being Spirit-Led:
  • Surrender to the Spirit
  • Practice a posture of praise
  • Give gratitude for God's goodness
  • Submit to one another

Discussion Questions

PART 1: Understanding the Indwelling
  1. Read Romans 8:9-11 together. What does it mean that "you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit"? How would you explain this to someone new to faith?
  2. The sermon contrasted "God Teaser" vs "God Pleaser." Which category do you find yourself in most often, and why?
  3. What does it mean that "the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness"? How have you experienced this spiritual life?

PART 2: Roommate or Ruler?
  1. The pastor said, "You gave Him a room and He came for the House!" What areas of your life have you kept as "your room" instead of surrendering to God's control?
  2. Honest moment: What are some ways we can be Spirit-filled but not Spirit-led? Share an example from your own life (if comfortable).
  3. The sermon mentioned that there's no way the Holy Spirit told us to cuss someone out, sleep with our sneaky link, or gossip about leaders. Why do we sometimes blame our flesh-driven decisions on God or justify them?

PART 3: Being Spirit-Led
  1. Read Ephesians 5:18-21. The passage says "be filled with the Spirit" (present, continuous tense). What does continuous filling look like in daily life?
  2. Which of the four signs of being Spirit-led is easiest for you? Which is most challenging?
    • Surrender to the Spirit
    • Practice a posture of praise
    • Give gratitude for God's goodness
    • Submit to one another
  3. How does submitting to one another (v. 21) demonstrate that we're Spirit-led? Can you share an example of when someone's submission blessed you or when your submission blessed someone else?

A Challenge for the Week:

Daily Practice: The Four Signs Choose one sign of being Spirit-led to focus on each day:
  • Monday: Surrender - Identify one decision you need to let God control
  • Tuesday: Praise - Set aside 15 minutes for worship (any style)
  • Wednesday: Gratitude - List 10 things you're thankful for (including challenges)
  • Thursday: Submission - Serve someone without being asked
  • Friday-Sunday: Practice all four together

Prayer Points and Prompt

Prayer Focus Areas:
  • Confess areas where we've been Spirit-filled but not Spirit-led
  • Ask God to help us unlock doors we've kept closed to Him
  • Pray for transformation, not just information
  • Thank God that His Spirit dwells in us and gives us life

Prayer Prompt: "Holy Spirit, You didn't move in to co-exist with my old ways. Help me surrender fully to Your leadership. Transform the areas I've kept locked..."
